A Word From Emily

Dear Friends, Family, and Eventing Enthusiasts,

It is hard to believe that I am writing this upon my arrival in Ocala, Florida for the 2007 winter season!  As we prepare to begin the excitement of a new season, it is also an opportune time to reflect on the year that has just passed.

The 2006 season was full of surprises, opportunities, education, and fun.  Thank you to everyone to in Middleburg for their help, guidance, and support in my first season in Virginia, most of all to Maryalice Matheson, Teresa Loughlin and David and Karen O’Connor.  A heartfelt thank you is also due for everyone else’s continued support, patience, and friendship from all over the place through phone calls, e-mails, and even surprise visits!  Each and every one of you made the year a memorable one!

The conclusion of the 2006 season marked the bittersweet end to seven seasons of competition with Beaufort.  We finished our career together with a 24th Place finish at the Radnor Hunt International Three-Day Event.  Beaufort has found a wonderful new home with Ms. Bailey Davis in The Plains, VA, where he will continue to event and fox hunt.

In addition to the invaluable eventing experience I gained during the 2006 season with Beaufort, Dynamic Review, and Twist of Fate, I was also lucky to have the opportunity to hunt three times each week as a groom with the prestigious Orange County Hunt.  I was fortunate to have the opportunity to ride a vast array of horses over the beautiful countryside, meeting a great cast of characters and improving my cross country skills simultaneously.  In October, Abby and May Keffer and I won the Limit Hunter division of the Orange County Hunt Team Chase!

I am eagerly awaiting the beginning of the 2007 season in Ocala, as I know the year ahead will be just as exciting as the last.  I am looking for a new horse myself, and I have a lovely young horse, Mr. Jeff Keffer’s London Bobby, with me in Ocala. I recently attained my Eligible Rider status with the American Horse Trials Foundation, Inc., and I am looking forward to the opportunity to work with the AHTF this year.  Please see the Join the Team section for more information on this exciting development.  Florida will prove to be busy as ever with many lessons, auditing clinics and the United States Equestrian Team training sessions and a busy competition circuit.  Please check back here often for more frequent updates during the upcoming season. I promise to keep it more up-to-date as the season progresses!

As always, call or e-mail with any questions or ideas.  In the meantime, have a great ride!

Hello everyone!

Welcome to my new website. Please have a look around. E-mail me with comments and suggestions.

Beaufort and I are all settled at beautiful Rock Ridge Farm, just outside Middleburg, VA, where we will be based for the remainder of 2006. The hills are fantastic for conditioning, and I am enjoying getting to know the Virginia countryside.

Beaufort and I are busy preparing with Karen and David O’Connor for our first competition of the summer at Surefire Farm Horse Trials on July 1st. Then we’re off to our first event in Area IV in four years: the Maui Jim Horse Trials outside of Chicago!

Thank you to Maryalice Matheson for welcoming me to her farm and training business and to everyone who has helped me make the transition to life in Middleburg!

A big thanks also to Elizabeth Sea for her expertise and help in putting the site together. Check back often for updates and the latest news and updates from training in Virginia and competitions across the country.

Have a great ride!

Emily

“…Riding is an ideal which has maintained its purity for centuries and has been cherished by skilled practitioners so as not to lose its clarity.  The high ethical values are derived from human virtues: humanity, respect for God’s creatures and nature, tolerance, honesty, modesty and self-criticism, and a sense of proportion.  This is what people can learn about life from the riding arena."
